Table of
German Divisions
and their
Regiments and Field Artillery & Engineer Battalions

Units in Italy after July 1944
This page lists the units for each of the German divisions that was in Italy after July 1944.  The table lists the Infantry Regiments and Field Artillery Battalions and the Engineer Combat Battalion associated with each division.  This table is for quick reference for identifying units mentioned in books.  Since the units were constantly being moved to counter the Allied advance, there is no way to accurately represent even the organization of a division.  Also, as some divisions were disbanded, their units were absorbed into other divisions.  The name, organization and size of each element may vary according to the type of unit, whether infantry, panzer grenadier or parachute.

How to use the Table
Scan down to a specific Division and read across the table for its individual elements under each column heading.  If no number is under that column, then that type of unit did not exist in that division.  Thus,
the Table shows that some divisions contained three Regiments but others only two.  The name of the element would also depend on the type of division, so a Luftwaffe Division would consist of Luftwaffe Regiments.
Table does not include Italian units.

Example3rd Panzer Grenadier Division consisted of 103rd Panzer Battalion(assault guns), 103rd
Panzer Reconnaissance Battalion,  8th and 29th Panzer Regiments, 3rd Panzer Artillery Regiment (2 motorized battalions, 1 self-propelled battalion), 3rd Panzer Anti-Tank Battalion, 3rd Panzer Engineer Btn, 3rd Panzer Signal Btn, 3rd Panzer Replacement Battalion and 312th Panzer AA Battalion (motorized).

Independant Units not listed in above Table
289th Grenadier Regiment

The German Battalion was the smallest, self-contained unit that could support itself in combat. It had sufficient offensive and defensive firepower and support elements to maintain a combat situation. The battalion size would range from 500 to 1000 men.
A Regiment would contain between 2,000 and 6,000 men.  A Division would contain from 1 to 4 regiments with 10,000 to 20,000 men.

8th Mountain Division - This was formed in February 1945 from the 157 Mountain Division (which may have been a training unit) and consisted of the 296 & 297 Jaeger Mountain Regiments and the 1057 Artillery Regiment.  It was assigned to the XIV Corps in the mountains around Bologna and surrendered to the US 5th Army.

504th & 508 Heavy Panzer Detachment or Schwere Panzer-Abteilung 504 - These were two Tiger Tank units that served in Italy.  The sPzAbt 504 was originally sent to Tunisia while one company remained in Sicily. It fought at Anzio and Arno Line and surrendered in Italy.  The sPzAbt 504 served in Italy at Anzio in March 1944 until February 1945.  This Tiger tank unit was composed of 45 Tiger Tanks; 3 companies of 14 Tigers each, plus 3 command vehicals.  The massive Panzerjäger Tiger "Elefant" was a self-propelled artillery built on the chasis of the Tiger Tank that also served in Italy, possibly with one of these units.  One was captured at Anzio and is now at the US Army Ordnance Museum.
