Divisional HQ Company - Header photo
Fort Dix, New Jersey - 1943

This is a large group photo of HQ Company  of the 85th Division Artillery.  Photo was taken at Fort Dix just prior to their embarking for North Africa on December 24, 1943, with the 85th Custer Division .
The HQ Company were the men who ran the Division Artillery command that was over the four artillery battalions within the 85th Infantry Division.  This company included clerks and drivers and even medics.

Due to the large format, the photo was divided into 4 composites.  Some photos have little or no overlap.  Each section can be enlarged to see their faces.  Click to enlarge and photo will open in a new window.

Roster of Division HQ Company

Roster was compiled from a roster obtained from Tech-5 Raymond Abbey.  This list was probably typed by some clerk in the HQ Company.

Roster is arranged in order shown in photo by rows. The "Photo-ID" column denotes the row and number that corresponds to their position in the group photo.  EX: S-14 refers to a soldier on the Second row and 14th from left.  Additional names were added of soldiers who were not in the photo because they joined the battery at a later date.

A special thanks to Donna Tyburec for providing the group photos of the Divisional Artillery HQ Company and the Medical Detachment.  Her father was Tech-5 Raymond W. Abbey who served as a medic and later a driver for the HQ staff and also the 910th Field Artillery Battery.
